Colombia: News of a tragic accident has come to light from the South American country Colombia. Fourteen people were killed and seven others injured in a landslide at an illegal gold mine in the Nariño region in the south-western part of the country. A regional official confirmed the revised death toll in the accident on Monday. After the incident, the rescue team reached the spot with great effort and carried out relief and rescue operations. However, the difficult topography of the site and the presence of criminal groups operating in the area made rescue operations difficult.

How did the accident happen in Colombia's illegal gold mine?

A major accident occurred due to a landslide in an illegal gold mine in the Nariño region located in the south-western part of Colombia. 14 people lost their lives in this accident, while seven people are said to be injured. After the accident, the local administration and rescue team started relief work at the spot.

The Nariño region is located near the Ecuadorian border and illegal mining activities have long been a challenge. Due to landslide in the mine, people got injured due to falling of mud and debris. In the video that surfaced after the accident, bodies were seen being taken out with the help of people and a digging machine. After this the bodies were kept in a small boat in the nearby river.

Why did the rescue team face difficulty in reaching the spot?

It was not easy to conduct relief and rescue operations after the accident. According to the Nariño Governor's Office, rescue teams faced great difficulties in reaching the scene due to the difficult geographical conditions of the area and the presence of criminal groups operating there.
Nariño's Secretary of Peace and Security Alex González informed the Caracol Network of the revised death toll. He said that the death toll in the accident has increased to 14. According to officials, the search operation for survivors has now ended.

This incident has once again raised serious questions about the safety of people working in illegal mining areas. Due to lack of adequate safety arrangements in such mines, there remains a risk of accidents.

How big a problem are illegal mining and criminal activities in Nariño?

Illegal mining in the Nariño region is not only a security problem but is also linked to organised crime. According to reports, armed groups operating in the area control activities such as gold illicit trade, drug trafficking and extortion.

Many communities living in this area face limited employment options. Speaking to news agency AFP, a source in the governor's office said that local people are left with very few livelihood options other than risky mining activities. Traditional small-scale mining has also almost ended.

Due to lack of employment options, people may be forced to take risks and work in illegal mines. In such circumstances the risk of mining accidents increases further.

Why do mine accidents occur frequently in Colombia?

Mine-related accidents are a frequent occurrence in Colombia. The danger is especially high in those areas where government monitoring and security rules are not effectively followed.

In the municipal area of Nariño, where the mine collapsed, local people have also accused armed groups of carrying out targeted killings of some people. It is reported that these people were suspected of having links with security forces or rival organisations or of stealing gold.

However, these allegations are yet to be independently confirmed. The latest incident highlights the deep connection between illegal mining, organised crime and the economic constraints of local people.
